What to offset?

What to offset?

Aviation involves a range of activities that generate CO2 emissions, including

  • Transport to and from airports
  • Manufacturing of aircraft and components
  • Maintenance of aircraft
  • Ground handling operations
  • Airport facilities including retail outlets
  • Flight operations

Approximately .02% of all carbon emissions are produced in private aviation. Many companies across the aviation value chain have set goals to be completed over the long term, but there are actions they can take today to move closer to accomplishing these objectives.

Beyond Carbon

The impacts of non-CO2 aircraft emissions at high altitudes came to prominence back in 1999 following publication of a special report by the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on aviation. This estimated the total historic impact of aviation on the climate to have been two to four times higher than for CO2 emissions alone.

Most of the impact of these non-CO2 emissions comes from the “cruise phase” of a flight when the plane is at high altitudes. Importantly, though, this impact depends largely on atmospheric conditions, such as temperature and the background concentrations of water vapour and nitrogen oxides.

Contrails, for example, form when water vapour condenses on aerosol emissions. They are thought to have a significant warming effect.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Several European countries aim for a sustainable aviation fuel mandate that will demand a certain percentage of consumed jet fuel from renewable sources.

Norway & Sweden are already initiated. In January 2020, Norway introduced the first SAF blending mandate. It demands just 0.5% initially but targets 30% SAF by 2030. Sweden followed with a mandate beginning at 0.8% in 2021 and increasing to 27% by 2030. Other countries anticipated to follow are Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain and others.
